I studied physics at the University of Freiburg and went to ETH Zurich for my doctoral studies, where I received the doctoral degree in 1998. This was followed by postdoctoral positions at the University of Guelph (Canada), Université Paris-Sud in Orsay (France), Durham University (UK), Hamburg University (DE) and University of Zurich (CH).
